BUFFALO, N.Y. — The final countdown is on until summer break. Anyone with a child in their life, besides preparing for the extra snacks and activities, is preparing for that infamous "summer slide."

Children’s author Mary C. Kerins, who's marking the release of her new book "The Cottage," has some tips and tricks.

Kerins says children typically have a two-hour literacy block every day at school, and that losing that each day over the summer can really add up. Kerins cited a 2015 study that shows that students can lose up to two to three months of reading skills over the summer, with the impact being most pronounced in underserved communities.

She says to use the 3 Es of summer — engage, encourage and explore.

Kerins also notes the NYS Assembly Reading Challenge. Students read for 15 minutes a day and mark it on a calendar. After that, they can send it in and get a certificate.

Also, this June 29 at Buffalo Canalside is the Children's Book Festival. Free books and activities will take over the lawn from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
