State officials just released the names of 104 people killed when Helene moved through North Carolina in late September. The storm destroyed communities when it flooded and washed away homes and business, stranded families and caused nearly 2,000 landslides and other storm-related damage, primarily in western North Carolina.

Hundreds of people were reported missing in the days following the storm, and that number slowly declined as time went on and people became reachable.
Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm in Florida's Big Bend on Sept. 26, and moved through western North Carolina the following day, Sept. 27.
