ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A new study is showing rent is rising faster than incomes in parts of Asheville.

Asheville ranks 7th in the nation for largest rent wage gap, according to data released by Smartest Dollar.

Renter’s wage gap is the gap between a renter's actual wage and the amount they need to make to afford the median rent for a one-bedroom rental.

The study says in the Asheville-metro area, someone would need to make $21.58 per hour to afford rent for a one-bedroom home.

They estimate the average renter in Asheville only makes $11.34 an hour. Smartest Dollar also reports the median cost for a one-bedroom home in Asheville is around $1,100 a month.
