WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Northwest Boulevard runs past two schools in the area, so safety issues plague twice the students. Forsyth County school officials are proposing a solution as kids have been seen darting in and out of traffic to get across the street.

"There are a couple things we're investigating to try and make this road safer for our students and accessible for the public as a street," Colon Moore, Director of Construction Planning for Forsyth County schools, says. "We want to eliminate the parking on both sides of the street, thus controlling the access and going across Northwest Boulevard."

Neighbors in the area also say traffic patterns and cross-walk limitations are problematic, even for adult runners. Officials are hoping to solve that issue along with preserving, reconfiguring and adding parking spaces in the area. The county hopes to start work on the changes by late spring, with a majority of the work happening during 2018 summer vacation.

The district is holding a public input meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the R.J. Reynolds High School cafeteria.
