Between January and March, Trump’s average approval rating was 45% — up from 42% during the same time period in 2017, when Trump scored the lowest job approval rating for a newly inaugurated president in Gallup polls dating back to Richard Nixon in 1969.

Republicans’ approval of Trump is 5 percentage points higher this term, and conservatives’ approval 7 points higher.

“Much of the increase in approval among other demographic subgroups, such as for men (+6), young adults (+6), Black adults (+9) and Hispanic adults (+15), primarily reflects higher Republican party identification and leaning among these groups over the past three years,” Gallup wrote in an article accompanying the data.

People over the age of 65, non-Hispanic White adults, Democrats and liberals were the only groups whose approval ratings for Trump declined this year compared with the first three months of his first term.

While Trump’s approval rating is higher so far this term than last, more Americans overall disapprove of the job he is doing on seven out of eight polling issues. More than 50% of those polled disapprove of his handling of the economy (59%), relations with Russia (58%), foreign affairs (55%), the situation in Ukraine (55%), the environment (54%), the federal budget (52%) and relations with the news media (51%).

The only policy where more Americans approve than disapprove of Trump’s handling is energy policy: 47% of those polled approve and 45% disapprove, with 8% having no opinion.

Trump's approval ratings fell along partisan lines with 83% to 90% of Republicans approving of Trump’s handling of the eight issues, 6% of Democrats approving and 32% to 41% of independents saying he is doing a good job.
