Federal money is flowing in to pay for Charlotte Douglas International Airport's new runway, U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis said. He said he recently helped secure funding for the busy airport.

What You Need To Know

  • Charlotte's airport is getting an additional runway thanks to an FAA grant, U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis said.  The money started flowing this summer

  • “Charlotte Douglas continues to be one of the busiest airports in the world, and as air traffic increases, we must work to ensure airplanes have minimal delays,” Tillis said

  •  The airport is already undergoing major renovations as the city continues to grow

The $21.5 million grant comes from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Improvement Program for Fiscal Year 2025, according to a release from the senator's office.

The airport is already undergoing a billion-dollar renovation and expansion project as the Queen City continues to grow. It broke ground on a fourth parallel runway in June 2023.

“Charlotte Douglas continues to be one of the busiest airports in the world, and as air traffic increases, we must work to ensure airplanes have minimal delays,” the Republican senator said. “This grant to construct a new 10,000-foot runway will significantly reduce congestion, improve operations, and enhance the overall travel experience for millions of passengers who rely on Charlotte as transportation hub.”
