Aging water main infrastructure is being replaced to meet current water system standards that include existing fire flow requirements.

According to an update released late Tuesday, DOW says the shutdown will affect a smaller area of customers. Affected areas include Kuhio Highway from the area west of Hanalei Elementary School to the intersection of Kuhio Highway with Malolo Road, as well as Mahimahi Road.

Areas mentioned in an earlier release — Weke Road and the area of Kuhio Highway that runs west of Hanalei Elementary School to Waikoko in the vicinity of the hairpin turn, as well as Amaama Road, Anae Road, Hee Road and Kumu Road — will not be affected.

Customers in areas from the intersection of Kuhio Highway with Anae Road up to Waikoko may experience intermittent low water pressure throughout the day, according to DOW.

Also, water buffaloes will not be provided as stated earlier.

In addition, the closure of the intersection at Kuhio Highway with Anae Road is cancelled, but the closure of the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Mahimahi Road will continue as scheduled at 8 a.m.

DOW advises customer to prepare for the shutdown by doing the following:

  • Store enough water to meet your needs until water service is restored
  • Let your family, friends, tenants and neighbors know about the water service shutdown
  • Those with faulty water heaters should ensure that their water heaters do not empty during the shutdown
  • Businesses should prepare accordingly for the shutdown

DOW advises motorists to use Malolo Road and Weke Road for entry, and exit via Anae Road and/or Mahimahi Road. Kuhio Highway will remain open during work hours, but will be restricted to one lane, alternating traffic.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution and slowly through the work area.

Updates will be posted on the DOW website. Contact DOW with questions at 808-245-5455 or email publicrelations@kauaiwater.org.
