TAMPA. Fla. — Silver Airways is stopping all operations on Wednesday.
Leaders at the airline are telling passengers not to go to the airport to fly Silver Airways and that they are not flying anymore. The company says travelers should be refunded through their credit card company or travel agent.
There were about 10 flights due to come in and 10 more due to go out of Tampa International Airport on Wednesday involving Silver Airways, which have all been canceled.
The airline has been flying routes in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean for the past 13 years.
Wednesday's announcement came as a surprise to some passengers who showed up for a flight that was cancelled.
"It started to become an issue over the past six months, where things just started getting cancelled," said passenger Tanya Hare. "It would be out of the blue. You would get notifications. It was kind of a red flag (Tuesday) when I tried to check in and it didn’t allow you the check in. It didn’t even give you the option."
The company declared bankruptcy in December, and says stopping all operations on Wednesday will help them restructure.
Silver Airways also abruptly canceled or delayed all their flights in March, turning customers away and leaving some people stranded.
The company said it is refunding passengers through credit cards and travel agents.
In a prepared statement Wednesday, Tampa International Airport said:
"Silver Airways announced that it has ceased operations across its network, including its three destinations from TPA – Fort Lauderdale, Pensacola and Key West – effective this morning.
All three of these destinations are served by other carriers at TPA. More information about those routes is available on our website.
The airline encouraged customers to seek refunds through points of sale at credit card companies and/or travel agencies."
