AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Pollinator Week is this month, and the city is celebrating with a lineup of educational events to raise awareness on protecting local pollinators.
Pollinators like bees, hummingbirds, butterflies and bats are crucial to food production, but pesticide use, habitat loss and climate change have led to population declines.
Austin was named a Bee City USA affiliate in 2022, becoming the program’s third-largest affiliate. The nonprofit organization encourages communities to protect pollinators through action and education.
“Being a Bee City isn’t just about a title – it’s a responsibility,” said Jesús Aguirre, director of Austin Parks and Recreation. “We’re proud to support pollinators through habitat creation, education, and public participation. These efforts help ensure Austin remains a haven for both people and pollinators.”
On June 10 at 1 p.m., Mayor Kirk Watson will kick off the week by reading the Pollinator Week proclamation at Austin City Hall. Then, from June 16 through June 22, the Austin Nature and Science Center and the Austin Public library will host free events to educate the community on protecting pollinators.
