JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.—Missouri is on track to ban Callery pear trees in 2029.
Senate Bill 105 cleared the House in May. It would ban the sale, import and export of Burning bush and all 81 varieties of Callery pear statewide.
The foul-smelling trees can overtake ecosystems and discourage native plant growth, said Missouri Invasive Plant Council Chairperson Carol Davit.
“The profuse white blossoms of this highly invasive tree make their alarming spread especially apparent in spring along roadsides, in fields, parks, and on private property,” said Missouri Invasive Davit said in a Missouri Department of Conservation press release.
If the bill is signed by Governor Mike Kehoe, new Callery pear trees will be banned in Missouri beginning in 2029.
