A crash involving a Honolulu City bus and a pickup truck on the H-1 Freeway near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Wednesday morning injured 20 people.
City spokesperson Ian Scheuring said the collision is under investigation, and he couldn’t answer questions regarding the cause of the crash.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to a 911 regarding the crash at 5:28 a.m. According to preliminary reports, 30 people were aboard the bus. Honolulu EMS checked 20 individuals who needed medical attention, with 17 patients transported by Honolulu EMS and 3 patients transported by American Medical Response, a private ambulance company. The patients transported to nearby hospitals had injuries that ranged from minor to serious.
"The Department of Transportation Services is extremely grateful to our first responder partners for their quick response ensuring the health and safety of our passengers," said Jon Nouchi, the department’s deputy director.
17 Honolulu EMS resources were dispatched, including multiple transport ambulances, field supervisors, and the department’s Mass Casualty Incident vehicle.
“This was a major response for Honolulu EMS, including multiple supervisors, ambulances, and a mass casualty vehicle. Our team worked quickly, compassionately, and professionally, and I was very proud of their efforts,” said Dr. Jim Ireland, director of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. “I am also very appreciative of the collaboration with the Honolulu Fire Department, Honolulu Police Department, American Medical Response, and Freeway Service Patrol.”
