ST. LOUIS—St. Louis residents whose homes were damaged by the recent tornado are eligible for reduced property taxes under a new bill passed by the Board of Aldermen on Friday.
“The bill that passed today specifically addresses homeowners. That is the prorated tax assurance bill,” Board President Megan Green said. “We are not continuing to assess people for properties that do not exist.”
Board Bill 24 is one of two measures designed to provide financial relief for those affected by the storm. A separate bill is aimed at providing financial assistance to renters affected by the tornado. Board Bill 23 was amended Wednesday, meaning renters will “have to wait a little bit longer,” for a board vote.
“We opened up and expanded the language to make sure that people that have been impacted by this tornado could be able to tap into this impacted tenants fund,” Alderman Rasheen Aldridge, Jr. said. “That could be able to help them with their first and last month’s rent.”
A special meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, when the Board is expected to vote on the renter aid bill. Members say both bills were introduced and advanced in just days — a process that typically takes about a month.
“We are moving as fast as we possibly can,” Green said. “The board has met three times this week as a full body… We will continue to do that work as we are reviewing ordinances and realizing whatever needs to be updated… to make processes work faster.”
