A Hornell man has been convicted on six felony counts for a pair of shaken baby attacks that critically injured his 3-month-old daughter in 2022.
Robert Taft, 28, was found guilty on all charges, including two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree reckless assault of a child and two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.
Prosecutors said Taft violently shook his infant daughter twice in October 2022, causing a near-fatal brain injury. Hornell police said the child was taken to St. James Hospital on Oct. 23, 2022.
Taft was arrested on Nov. 11, 2022.
“This was a difficult case for all of us, prosecutors, investigators and witnesses – we are all parents,” Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker said. “We all know the victim will suffer for the rest of her life because of what the person who was supposed to protect and care for her did instead."
Taft faces a mandatory state prison sentence up to 25 years on the top counts at sentencing in a county courtroom Aug. 1.
