GRAPEVINE, Texas — Following arrests in a jet ski hit-and-run on Tuesday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued immigration detainers to Grapevine police for Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez-Gonzalez and Maikel Alexander Coello-Perozo on Wednesday.

ICE uses detainers to guarantee they can detain individuals for immigration reasons, irrespective of local law enforcement’s decisions.

Following a jet ski collision on May 25 that killed 18-year-old Ava Moore while she kayaked on Grapevine Lake, Gonzalez-Gonzalez was arrested in connection with the incident and faces charges of felony manslaughter.

After the collision, Gonzalez-Gonzalez and Coello-Perozo, both undocumented immigrants, allegedly fled the scene, hitting two other cars as they left.

Coello-Perozo faces charges for hindering apprehension.

“This senseless tragedy was 100 percent preventable,” said ICE Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Daikerlyn Gonzalez and Maikel Perozo should have never been in our country and Ava Moore should be alive today preparing for the Air Force Academy.”

Coello-Perozo and Gonzalez-Gonzalez are both undergoing deportation proceedings, according to ICE.
