UVALDE, Texas — Nearly three years after the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, the victims are still being remembered one day at a time.

Wednesday, May 14, was a day to remember Eliahana Torres.

“She was very smart. Very sassy," Eliahana's uncle Rudy Aguero said.

Her uncle wasn't alone, as people in Uvalde and across the state and country remembered her too. They wore purple, showed off her favorites — butterflies and sunflowers — and rocked softball shirts and team gear, making sure the day was all about her.

“It brings some sort of solace," Aguero said.

Rudy doesn’t like to talk about the incident that took his niece’s life. He prefers to celebrate Eliahana for who she was.

“The best thing we can do to move forward is just to honor them and love them for who they were while they were gifted to us for the short time that they were here with us," Aguero said.

This day was Eliahana’s, but she wasn’t alone. This was all part of a 21-day tribute. A promise from the district and the Uvalde community to hold close the memories of those lost, while shining a light on each one.

“She was a little bit mature than the others," Arnulfo Reyes said with a smile.

Reyes was Eliahana’s teacher.

“She had a big crush on a little boy across the hallway, and I always think about that because she would stand by the door and look out the window just so she could see a little glimpse of him, and when she did, it was like the world was just whew," Reyes said.

He lost all of his students that day. Having been shot twice himself, he knows how everyone affected can get grouped together and feels like a separate day for each is a special tribute.

“When you think about all of them, it’s a lot. It’s a lot to take in. Honoring them individually because they were individuals you know. I mean I really like it," Reyes said.

After three years it could be easy to forget the faces, the hobbies, the people that they were. But days like these make sure they’ll be remembered now and forever.

“They all had a name, they all had a life, and it was taken from them, and we need to make sure we preserve their memory and cherish them," Aguero said.
