There are new developments in the search for the remains of a woman who went missing in the Southern Tier more than two decades ago.
Michele Harris was reported missing from her home in Spencer in the early morning hours of September 12, 2001. She is presumed dead and her remains have never been found.
Michele's estranged husband, Cal Harris, is offering a $100,000 reward for any information that leads to the recovery of her remains, "regardless of anyone being prosecuted for her death," a statement read.
Cal Harris, who state police investigated for years, was twice convicted of her murder. The first conviction in 2007 was set aside after a witness came forward contending they saw Michele Harris on the morning of the 12th, after when authorities allege she died. The second conviction in 2009 was overturned by a state appeals court three years later. A third trial in 2015 ended with a hung jury, leading to a fourth and final trial in 2016, where a judge found Harris not guilty.
Harris, who before the legal saga began was a successful car salesman in the Southern Tier, filed a federal lawsuit against the state of New York for what he believes is wrongful imprisonment after his second conviction. That case will begin in October. He has also filed a separate lawsuit against investigators involved in his case.
