TAYLOR COUNTY, Ky. — A Kentucky teenager, Lylah Curry, has made a full recovery after a golf cart accident knocked her unconscious and left her injured.
Curry, a softball player for Taylor County High School, has been belting home runs ever since she was a little girl.
“I love the competition and the adrenaline when I play softball. It’s like ‘Go, go go,’ when you’re working hard for something,” Curry said.
However, Curry’s success came to a halt after she was in a golf cart accident in July 2024. Her mother, Patty Curry, rushed to see if her daughter was okay.
“I get to the scene. I was like ‘Oh… OK,’” Patty said.
The accident knocked Lylah unconscious, leaving her badly injured.
“Broken femur, broken jaw,” Lylah said.
Curry was rushed to Norton Children’s, where surgeons performed several procedures. Doctor Josh Meier was one of her surgeons. He helped lead the effort to fix her femur and tissue.
“We cleaned her elbow soft tissue injury out a little bit and repaired that. Then, put a solid rod or nail in her femur, which stabilizes the bone from the inside,” Meier said.
She then had her jaw surgery.
“Had her bones fixed, had her jaw shut, then we just go from there,” Patty said.
After that, Lylah made her way into physical therapy. Her recovery would include one more femur surgery three weeks before the season began.
“I wanted to get back to my normal. I don’t want to be somebody that got in a golf wreck and held back for the rest of her life. I wanted to get back to where I wanted to be,” Lylah said.
Roughly eight months after the initial wreck, Curry is back on the field, playing varsity for Taylor County High School — now, with an extra ounce of gratitude.
“It’s such a blessing to be out here. It’s like why worry about a batting average,” Curry said. “Why worry? You’re blessed to be out here and play. You have the physical ability, just enjoy it.”
A testament to her resiliency, in the face of adversity.
