The Salvation Army has agreed to suspend operations at its Food and Hygiene Pantry and Soup Kitchen in Binghamton after a guest died from injuries sustained in a stabbing during a community dinner at the Bonghamton Corps Community Center, a spokesperson for the organization said Friday.
Kevin Ray, 57, of Endicott, died from knife wounds to his shoulder and neck Tuesday afternoon at 131 Washington St., Binghamton police said.
Michael Brutvan was charged with second-degree murder Wednesday in Binghamton City Court and taken to the Broome County Correctional Facility, according to police.
"The Salvation Army is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this senseless act of violence, and we are praying for Mr. Ray’s family, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragedy," said Robert Barlow, director of marketing and external communications for The Salvation Army.
He said the organization is working to identify interim solutions to provide meals, food supplies and hygiene products for 100-200 individuals who rely on it for support.
Police continue to investigate the incident and ask anyone with information to call (607) 772-7080.
