FLORISSANT, Mo. – The University of Missouri–St. Louis has secured an additional $10 million in funding from St. Louis County to support the planned North County business and workforce district.
The County Council approved the grant in April, using money from the American Rescue Plan Act in an effort to “anchor the South campus and enhance its reputation.”
“This transformational project will not only advance the University's mission to be more deeply involved in the community and improve the quality of life in our region,” said County executive Sam Page. “[It] will aid in transforming UMSL’s South Campus into a hub of economic growth, education, and community services.”
The university has received $80 million in state funding over the past three years, funding an expanded and relocated Optometry college, renovated library and more through the $110 million Transform UMSL initiative. The additional $10 million looks to fund the demolition of outdated buildings that are too expensive to renovate or maintain, making room for physical and behavioral health buildings on the South campus.
Plans for the North County business and workforce district include new businesses and amenities, including a childcare center, retail and residential spaces and other mixed-use buildings.
“This incredible investment will not only allow UMSL to build a campus for the future that will serve students for decades to come but will create a positive economic impact…while welcoming businesses and opportunities to grow Missouri’s workforce,” said Chancellor Kristin Sobolik.
St. Louis County Executive Sam Page presented Sobolik and County Council Chair Rita Days with the $10 million check at a ceremony Wednesday.
“Anybody who comes through these doors can be educated, from babies to PHD-ers,” Days said. “They can get whatever you need here. And because of the expansion here on this campus, that's exactly what will happen…We got to have something for the neighbors and for the people who work here.”
