WEBSTER, Mass. - Ocean State Job Lot continues to increase their footprint in New England .It comes at a time when other large stores are closing. Chief Marketing Officer Curtis Corl points to their frugality as one of their best assets.
"We look at real estate like we do when we buy merchandise," Corl said. "We buy things or lease properties at the right price."
The company says being frugal has allowed them to avoid significant impacts from the president's recent tariff hikes, which has helped them grow into more communities while some other retailers have closed stores.
In fact, they're taking advantage of some of those other retailers leaving shopping plazas.
"We lean heavily into closeouts. So yeah, it affects all retailers," Corl said. "But we're nimble enough and we also have the opinion that we don't have to buy anything. We're very select. If the price isn't there, we just won't buy it. We'll buy into some other category."
The Rhode Island-based retailer celebrating the opening of their webster location Wednesday. The former home of Big Lots. They also opened a store in new jersey this week.
Approximately 60 jobs are now online in Webster. Chair of the town's Select Board Earl Gabor says the store's opening is wildly important in a time of economic uncertainty.
"Jobs are key to having money to feed back into the community," said Gabor. "And I think ocean state carries what Webster needs, the residents of Webster needs."
Corl says while the next year is expected to be a challenge for retail, Ocean State Job Lot says they plan to open more stores.
