The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife has opened the Keanakolu Bunkhouse and Ranger cabins in the Hilo Forest Reserve for camping reservations seven days a week.

Reservations had been limited to Friday through Saturday stays since the COVID pandemic, but opening the facilities to weekly stays will provide residents and visitors the opportunity to explore the forest at their leisure.

Located at a 6,000-foot elevation, the rustic cabins sit near an orchard of plum, apple and apricot trees. The fruit is in season from June through October and available to pick by permit only. People can request a collection permit online or at the DOFAW’s Hawaii Island District Office in Hilo.
