WORCESTER, Mass. - Mother’s Day marks a busy spring weekend for businesses who offer ways to help honor moms.
Holmes-Shusas Florist in Worcester said they’ve got experience with helping families celebrate Mother’s Day.
“I started this 50 years ago,” owner Paul Shusas said.
Shusas said between loose bouquets and fresh arrangements, Mother’s Day means fulfilling hundreds of orders for his shop.
“It's busy. Everyone remembers their mothers, certainly," Shusas said. "And, if they're fortunate enough to have their mother still with them. And it's the busiest of the holidays; even more so than Valentine's Day.”
Through 50 years of arranging flowers, Shusas takes pride in helping people make their loved ones happy.
“Still love it. Still do not want to stop. Still can perform at a high level. Have most of the faculties; most," Shusas joked. "But I enjoy and have great help. It's a fun place. It's good to work with a product that makes people happy.”
“Got to celebrate moms. They’re the special people in our lives that give us everything we're thankful for," Kevin Comellas said. "I think of Mother's Day as like a second Thanksgiving.”
When it comes to a Mother’s Day meal, chef Kevin Comellas has started organizing brunches at the Worcester Public Market for special events this year, now adding a brunch to celebrate moms.
“We started with the Saint Patrick's Day brunch, and we did one for (WooSox) Opening Day as well. It went really, really well, so we thought kind of brunch around the world for Mother's Day," Comellas said. "So, we have a bunch of the vendors here coming together and doing kind of a Vegas style brunch.”
Six of the market’s vendors are teaming up to host a buffet and Comellas said he hopes to have some time for his own mother by the end of it.
“I'll be here making brunch, cooking. I'll call mom up on the phone," Comellas said. "Hopefully I can get out to New Hampshire at the end of the day.”
No matter what your plans are, Shusas says it all depends on what mom wants on Mother’s Day.
“Even if someone just gets a single rose, they're remembered, many people go overboard for their mother," Shusas said, "and it depends upon what mother's like best.”
