CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo welcomed a new Matschie's tree kangaroo joey this week, just in time for Mother's Day.
The joey was born to first-time parents, Kiari and Modi, according to the zoo.
The zoo said the joey is not yet ready for the public, as the baby is enjoying time with his mom behind the scenes.
Matschie tree kangaroos are currently endangered, according to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. The alliance said it's believed there are fewer than 2,500 adult Matschie’s tree kangaroos left in their native habitat, and that their population continues to drop due to hunting by people for food and trade, as well as expanding agriculture threatening the population.
Matschie's tree kangaroos have a life span of about 12 years, and they live in a very specific area of the world: the Huon Peninsula of New Guinea. They love to climb trees, but 60% of the time, they're asleep.
