RALEIGH, N.C. — May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, which is timely as you may notice more motorcycles out on the roadways as the weather warms up.

What You Need To Know

  • May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

  • A safety course is not required for riders over 18 in our state

  •  32 community colleges in North Carolina offer safety courses

  • Courses are for both novice and experienced riders

Advocates say while a safety course is not required for riders over 18 in our state, the skills taught there can make a world of difference for both novice and veteran riders.

“What I hope we are able to do with most riders is give them a safety mindset so when they get on the bike, they are thinking about, 'how do I do this safely?'” said Bob Wagner, director of the N.C. Motorcycle Safety Program.

The N.C. Motorcycle Safety Education Program provides courses at 32 community colleges across the state. More than 200 rider coaches teach participants all the skills they need to be safe on the roadways.

Motorcycle riders are advised to dress in bright colors and have plenty of lights on the bike in order to be as visible as possible.
