COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry hosted two hunts for disabled hunters during the first weekend of April, according to an ODNR press release.
The hunts took place at Pike State Forest and Blue Rock State Forest, where participants were hunting wild turkey. ODNR said these are annual hunts before the start of the spring season.
“These hunts are a highlight of our year—getting to share time in the woods with such an inspiring group of hunters and partners is a privilege,” said Dan Balser, ODNR Division of Forestry Chief, in the release. “It’s thanks to our local partners that we’re able to host these events and provide an unforgettable experience.”
Hunters at these events brought their own guns, ammo and permits, but they were provided with guides to assist them with mobility, harvesting and other activities. Several of the hunters, according to the ODNR, were disabled veterans.
The hunt at Blue Rock State Forest featured 23 hunters and more than 60 guides. The one at Pike State Forest saw the participation of 16 hunters and more than 50 volunteers.
“Ohio’s regular spring turkey hunting season is divided into two zones,” the release read. “The south zone season opened Saturday, April 19 and the northeast zone will open Saturday, May 3.”
