ORLANDO, Fla. — You can now experience artwork new to Central Florida thanks to an art collector who has donated many of his prized possessions.

1. Edouard Prulhière is French. He transforms canvases into pieces that blur the line between painting and sculpture.

2. The artist folds, crumples, tears, and cuts canvases while he’s painting them. “The main reason is I found freedom in painting,” he said. “I forgot about time, or the world, and my insecurities.”

3. “The Inverted Sound of Painting” is here in Orlando thanks, in part, to a recent gift of 314 artworks from Dr. James Cottrell. He started off as a young collector living in lower Manhattan in the 1970s, and he and his husband, Joseph Lovett, have been building a collection of contemporary art for more than 45 years.

4. “I’ve known Edouard since the 90s and I’ve never seen all of his work together like this,” Cottrell said. “It’s like being in a candy shop. It’s so beautiful.”

5. This limited-time exhibit is on display at the Orlando Museum of Art through May 2, 2025. Museum admission tickets range from $8 to $20.
