CINCINNATI — Hamilton County commissioners declared a state of emergency Tuesday following widespread flooding this week.
After numerous storms and showers throughout the end of last week and into the weekend, the Ohio River crested at 60 feet Monday morning, which is more than double its normal height and is defined as "moderate" flooding by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
However, the Ohio River is expected to remain in the moderate flood stage for several days, according to officials.
It has flooded several roads, damaged homes, cars and more around the area.
Commissioners said the declaration would help mobilize and utilize additional resources, allowing the county to streamline the recovery process for those who have been affected by the flooding.
Hamilton County Public Health released tips on how to maintain safety while cleaning up after a flood:
-Wash hands frequently during clean up
-Wear rubber boots and gloves
-Do not allow children to play in areas that were affected by flood waters and sewage backup
-Open windows and increase ventilation by using fans to increase air circulation and speed up drying
-Discard food exposed to flood waters, including items in refrigerators or freezers that have taken in water
-Discard all fully thawed foods as well as partially thawed foods that won’t be immediately prepared
-Discard or properly wash and disinfect toys, clothing and other contaminated objects
