TAVARES, Fla. — The State Attorney's Office for the Fifth Judicial District announced Thursday that prosecutors would pursue the death penalty for a woman and her boyfriend accused of abusing her son for months and ultimately killing him.
Kimberly Mills and Andre Walker have been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, felony first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, among others.
According to information from the Tavares Police Department, Mills and Walker are accused of bringing 10-year-old Xavier Williams to the hospital on Feb. 22, covered in bruises and burns in various stages of healing. According to emergency workers at the hospital, Williams was near death when he was brought to the hospital.
"The doctor advised (Williams) was in critical condition and they were not sure if he was going to survive," a TPD police arrest affidavit said.
Williams ultimately suffered cardiac arrest and died from his injuries at a later date.
During Thursday's announcement, State Attorney Bill Gladson said the pair are accused of abusing Williams from Dec. 24 through Feb. 20 — allegedly using items like a dumbbell, boxing gloves, flashlights and a copper rod to strike him.
