AKRON, Ohio — Goodyear's Blimp is preparing for its 100th anniversary, and to celebrate, it will fly with a retro design.

The company recognizes June 3 as the official date of the anniversary.

What You Need To Know

  • June 3 marks the 100th year anniversary of the Goodyear Blimp

  • Wingfoot One will be re-wrapped to look like the company's first branded blimp, Pilgrim

  • The process will take several weeks

  • Goodyear did not say where the blimp would make its first appearance with the new look

Wingfoot One is being rewrapped with a black and silver color scheme, which includes a vintage Goodyear logo on each side and the return of the blue and yellow Goodyear “house flag” that were on the company’s earliest blimps. The look is inspired by Goodyear’s very first branded blimp, Pilgrim.

Wingfoot One is the only blimp to feature the new design. Other blimps will maintain the current blue and gold look.

“Bringing back the look of Goodyear’s first branded blimp is a fitting tribute as we mark our 100th anniversary,” said Laura Duda, Goodyear’s senior vice president and chief communications officer in a news release. “The vintage design pays homage to the rich history of the Goodyear Blimp and is intended to evoke a sense of nostalgia and excitement among our fans as we celebrate this year.”

Wrapping the blimp will take several weeks to complete, so the blimp will not make its first public appearance until it is complete. Goodyear has not said where the unveiling will occur, wanting fans of the airship to guess where it will show up first.

From the World Series to the Olympics, Goodyear’s blimps have made aerial appearances across the country. The company said fans are encouraged to tag @GoodyearBlimp on social media with guesses and to watch for hints for where the blimp is headed.
