PINEHURST, N.C. — A person holding a weapon was shot and killed by police Wednesday as firefighters were battling a fire, according to the Village of Pinehurst government.

Officers responded to a suspicious person around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning off Remington Lane, officials said. Once they got to the home, they saw smoke and quickly called the fire department.

While crews were working on putting it out, a person came out of the home charging at first responders with a weapon, according to town officials.

The person was shot by the police and taken to the hospital, where they eventually died from their injuries.

Pinehurst Fire Department could later get the fire under control. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating which is standard procedure.

The victim’s name is withheld pending notification of kin.
