Crews are continuing to search for a child who went missing along the Tar River in Franklin County Monday evening.
Franklin County Emergency Services said they spent nearly seven hours searching the river for the child before suspending operations early Tuesday morning.
"Search teams battled tough terrain, cold water and swift currents," Franklin County Emergency Services said. The river's water levels were elevated from recent rains.
"Tonight, response crews from across Franklin County along with support from Wake Forest Swift Water Rescue Team, N.C. Emergency Management, N.C. State Highway Patrol came together to search for one of our younger members of our community who went missing along the Tar River," emergency crews said.
Emergency crews plan to resume the search Tuesday using more specialized teams and resources.
"We want this individual found and brought home, and we will do everything we can to make that a reality," Franklin County Emergency Services posted.
Franklin County is northeast of Raleigh. The Tar River runs southeast through the county, including through the county seat of Louisburg.
