CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Being a team player is important for Jewel Lewis. It's one of the reasons she has been named a Spectrum News 1 High School Scholar.

“I think it's so beautiful when you do something, you work really hard at it and like, getting that feedback and that good feeling,” Lewis said.

Whether she’s helping a classmate organize an event, or giving back in the community through her volunteer group, the Charlotte Christian head prefect is always ready to jump in and help wherever needed.

“Being a leader is really about serving and coming with a gentle heart,” Lewis said. “Being a leader is really about serving and coming with a gentle heart,” Lewis said.

Throughout her schooling, Lewis said she’s always pushed herself to try new things and put herself out there.

“It's just super fun to be involved and to make friends that you would have never had otherwise,” Lewis said.

And she reminds herself, it’s OK to fail.

“You either feel like it turns out good or bad,” Lewis said. “But it’s just an experience and something to learn from. I think having that learning mindset makes nothing seem like a waste."

And as she looks toward college and the future, she hopes she can inspire younger kids to take risks to try something new.

“It's a learning experience. And I think all of those experiences will help me in my future,” Lewis said. “And I think keeping that mindset really creates value in everything I do. So, I think honestly, my high school journey has been a journey of discovering what success actually means.”

Lewis is one of 15 Spectrum News 1 High School Scholars chosen this year from across North Carolina.

With the honor, Rep. Julia Greenfield of Mecklenburg County presented Lewis with a check for $1,000 that can be used at whatever school she chooses to attend in the fall.

At this time, Lewis has not decided which school she would like to attend. She does, however, hope to one day get her MBA and go into business administration or a leadership role.
