WILMINGTON, N.C. — A North Carolina student is being recognized for embodying the qualities of a future leader in the field of engineering and is always volunteering her time to give back to others in need.

This week’s Spectrum News 1 High School Scholar award goes to a Wilmington senior who some say has true leadership potential.

Jaida Dorsey, a senior at Wilmington Early College High School, is the definition of a high achiever.

She is a dual-enrolled student. She attends an early college high school, so she’s also enrolled at Cape Fear Community College with an almost perfect college GPA.

“I think just having motivation is probably the biggest thing,” Dorsey said.

This academic year, Dorsey will graduate with an associate degree in science.

She’ll have done all this before graduating high school.

Once she does, however, she’ll pursue a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. It's the first step to embarking on a rewarding career in the field.

“I have a very supportive group of people around me, so that's been really helpful in me keeping my grades up,” Dorsey said.

Those who know Dorsey said this is just who she is. She is always striving to learn more.

Her academic achievements, leadership and commitment to her community make her a deserving high school scholar.

The teen volunteers with organizations that give back to people in need, like Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, Communities in Schools and Teen Court.

Dorsey said her family is proud of her accomplishment.

“My mom was like freaking out in the living room because she was so excited for me,” Dorsey said.

Dorsey said she makes sure she does things that are important to her.

“All of the things that I do in my life are something that I enjoy and something that I know will either benefit me or benefit the community that surrounds me,” Dorsey said.

Dorsey is the secretary of Cape Fear Community College's student engineers club.

Prior to that, she held the joint positions of secretary and treasurer, helping to run the club with her planning and organizational skills.

Through the Spectrum News 1 High School Scholars program, Dorsey was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for the school of her choice. Rep. Ted Davis presented her with the award.
