WILMINGTON, N.C. — Sherri Tynes is the only woman being inducted in the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame this year.

Whether it’s swimming, cycling or weight training, Tynes is out moving her body daily.

“Having been a, I guess, a physical educator, educated coach all my life, always pro-fitness. So in my retirement, it’s something I’ve continued to do, and I enjoy so much every day,” Tynes said.

From a young age, Tynes has always participated in sports.

“Well, my dad encouraged me to play sports, and so I played sports all through high school, played basketball, volleyball. I did a little bit of track and then played basketball in college at East Tennessee State,” Tynes said.

While she always wanted to be a teacher, in her senior year of college, she was offered an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

“I had a chance to go to James Madison as a graduate assistant coach and and get my master’s degree while coaching with the women’s basketball program,” Tynes said.

The beginning of her career was spent coaching college hoops at James Madison, UNC Charlotte, Francis Marion and UNC Wilmington. Tynes then decided to pursue her education goal and found herself at Laney High School.

Over the past 30 years, Tynes has coached many sports, including men’s and women’s golf, women’s basketball, as well as fast and slow-pitch softball.

“Basketball got me to Laney, but the thing about coaching in high school is you pretty much will coach whatever they need you to coach,” Tynes said.

Through her high school coaching career, Tynes has a 423-189 record. And this year she is being inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame on May 19.

“I was just really fortunate to have really good administrative support, like assistant coaches along the way and some fantastic student athletes and parents who were very supportive of what we tried to do,” Tynes said.

Tynes is known as a local legend, but gives credit to those who supported her through her career.
