RALEIGH, N.C. — If anyone deserves a day of their own, it’s the men and women who serve this country.
Wednesday was Military Appreciation day at the North Carolina State Fair. The morning kicked off with a parade and other acknowledgments.
Walking into the state fairgrounds feels like entering North Carolina's version of the Roman Colosseum, except instead of gladiators there’s only friendly competition for the next spot in line, a mini-roller coaster you have to scream your way through and all kinds of tasty meals hot off the grill.
James Taylor grew up coming to the fair as a Raleigh resident, but now he returns as a food vendor.
“The state fair is one of the best things there is in North Carolina. Everybody in North Carolina, you coming to the North Carolina State Fair. Come on out here and have fun, bring the kids and go back home,” he said.
His memory of childhood trips with his mom and dad to the fair stick to his mind like the delicious greasy food served on the fairgrounds will stick to your gut.
“My favorite memory was as a child coming in here and getting lost. When I got lost I had fun because they couldn’t find me for a couple hours, and I ran around, (then) did everything. Then I got to the end and saw my mom and dad back at the gate. I got my butt tore up,” he said with a laugh. ”But hey, those are family memories — being able to come out with your mother and father and enjoying life, sharing experiences.”
Rubbing shoulders with strangers is nothing new for the 50-year-old after serving five years in the Navy.
“We sacrifice our life to go fight for our families, for the kids, to have a better place to live,” Taylor said.
The sailor-turned-cook said having a day to acknowledge the sacrifice made by so many is moving.
“It means a lot to me. It’s (been) a big impact on my life. I respect all of those in the armed forces (who) serve their country, and I salute them,” he said.
These folks salute him by ordering whatever he makes. Because what’s better than a full tummy than a full heart?
“Best place ever,” Taylor said.
