Police have arrested a man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a social justice activist in Brooklyn, the NYPD said Thursday.

Brian Dowling, 18, was arrested on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon in Brooklyn Thursday morning, the department said.

Police said Ryan Carson, 32, was fatally stabbed near the intersection of Lafayette Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant just before 4 a.m. on Monday.

Officers who responded to the scene found Carson with multiple stab wounds to his chest, the NYPD said. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Friends of Carson told NY1 the Brooklyn resident dedicated much of his life to climate activism, even appearing on Spectrum News Albany in 2021, where he called on the state to expand its bottle deposit law.

His commitment to social justice took a personal turn when his best friend died of a drug overdose, they said. He then embarked on a 500-mile march from Brooklyn to Buffalo to raise awareness for overdose prevention legislation.

Attorney information for Dowling wasn’t immediately available Thursday.
