CHICAGO—Illinois is exploring creating a new state flag. Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill Monday creating a commission to explore creating a new state flag and developing several new designs for it.
“Throughout our 205-year history, Illinois has boasted two official state flags—and it may be time we create a new one that exemplifies the values of our great state,” said Governor JB Pritzker in a press release.
By September 2024, the flag commission will select no more than 10 potential flag designs to share with the General Assembly. By December, it will submit a report including its recommendation on if the flag should be replaced or not.
"Our state flag demonstrates who we are as one Illinois, uplifting our history and our values. This bill will ensure the Illinois flag continues to be a symbol of progress and the ideals we uphold with the utmost honor," said Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton.
Illinois’ first official state flag was chosen in 1915 and amended in 1969 to include the state’s name so it was easily identifiable.
The second flag became official in 1970 and included the state seal.
