CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A disc golf app called U Disc ranked the Charlotte metro area as the country’s fourth best place for disc golf.

Holly Finley is a professional disc golfer who hopes to live in Charlotte one day. 

“It’s just the best place to train and the best place to live if you are a fan of disc golf,” Finley said.

Mecklenburg County has 20 disc golf courses with different difficulty levels.

“You get a full variety as far as skill level goes,” Finley said.

Finley’s first competition was in Charlotte in 2012. Back then, she played as an amateur.

“I placed fourth at the world championships here in 2012, which was the best worlds of all time and the reason I fell in love with Charlotte. I decided it was time to go pro," Finley said.

The tournaments also put Charlotte on the map.

Charlotte Disc Golf Club and Mecklenburg County worked together to add 10 disc golf courses to host the combined world championships. 

Mark Huether, director of operations for the Professional Disc Golf Association, said now the group oversees 20 of the courses. 

“Then from that growth and the popularity of the sport, we've gained some more properties and we’ve been given more opportunities to build more courses in Charlotte,” Huether said. 

The quality, the variety and proximity of the courses are some reasons Finley is living in her van in Charlotte during the off season. 

She wants to eventually move for Charlotte and reach her goal of winning a world championship. 

“It’s a lovely place to come, hone in your skills, and if you are not into the serious part, just have fun,” Finley said. 

Huether said the sport brings homeowners and tourists to the area. 

Charlotte is also considered the best in the Southeast for disc golf.
