NEW BERN, N.C. — For this group of friends, knitting and crocheting aren’t just hobbies; they are a way to give back to the community.

What You Need To Know

  • Loops of Love is a group that knits and crochets items such as hats and scarves for those in need.

  • The items are donated to local organizations who distribute them.

  • The group is always looking for yarn donations to keep their project going.

“I’m so happy that people are getting them and being able to use the things that we make,” Kayla Wilkes says.

Wilkes helped start Loops of Love almost a year ago. The group makes lots of different items, from chemo hats to winter scarves to eyeglass cases. The items are then donated to organizations all around New Bern, including the dialysis center, CarolinaEast Medical Center, homeless shelters, Religious Community Services, and more. Those who receive the products love them.

“It was just wonderful to have somebody so excited about the things that we were making. And they were just so happy that we were thinking about them,” Wilkes says.

Although some of the members are just learning how to knit, others have been doing it since they were kids. Their main goal is to meet the needs of those who are less fortunate.

“I was very sick for a number of years, and if it hadn’t been for my family and my husband who helped me, I would have been, I would have been really in a bad way. So I understand that people need to be helped sometimes, and this is one way I can help,” Clare Trautmann, one of the members of Loops of Love, says.

Loops of Love meets every Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. They are always looking for yarn and material donations.
