Management says with the increase in volume comes a need to expand the facility from the inside out.
A recent federal grant for $4.9 million will go toward a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) facility.
This will consolidate operations like training and response from several locations throughout the airport to one new building.
The current building is 2,000 square feet and the design for the new building more than triples that at 7,500 square feet.
With the ARFF expansion comes other improvement projects to EWN.
“We will increase the area of the area of the terminal that can be used by the passengers for when they’re boarding and deboarding their airplanes and screening through TSA,” says airport Director Andrew Short.
He says he hopes to break ground in spring 2020.
