ATLANIC BEACH, N.C. -- Family and friends of a young man who died trying to save a child from drowning gathered to celebrate his life.

The memorial for 24-year-old Austin Potter at the Oceanana Pier was filled with dozens of friends and loved ones. Potter's ashes were spread out into the ocean, the same water that claimed his life and the life of 5-year-old Liam Okkerse Tuesday.

Potter's father says he died a hero.

“He did what we we’re supposed to do. That's what I'd expect him to do, that's what I would do. That's what any man would do. It’s terrible it had to happen the way it happened,” Donnie Potter, Austin’s father, said.

Many of those in attendance came from Longhorn Steakhouse in Morehead City where Austin and his girlfriend worked. The restaurant made arrangements to bring in outside waiters so all of the coworkers could attend the memorial.
