CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. -- JT Barber Elementary school is staring year round schooling this summer.
- Classes for this academic year end on June 14. Students will return to school on June 22
- Administrators noticed a decline in overall performance from students since 2014 according to North Carolina School Report Cards
- The new calendar is an attempt to increase those scores with consistent school attendance while meeting the social and emotional needs of students

Administration collected feedback about the new calendar from families and the community. Assistant Principal Rachel Eure said the majority of responses were positive while others were hesitant.
"Kids will be in session for 45 days, and then they'll have three weeks break and out of those three weeks they'll have one week where they can attend and have enrichment."

Parents can opt out of the year round school but will have to find another school best suited for their family's needs.
