BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. – Two-way traffic has reopened on the G.V. Barbee Bridge in Oak Island.

  • The G.V. Barbee Bridge has completely reopened in Oak Island.
  • Two-way traffic was made impossible due to repairs over the last six months.
  • The repairs were completed ahead of the NCDOT's deadline.

The G. V. Barbee Bridge runs NC-133 across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, connecting Oak Island to the mainland.

The 60-year-old bridge has been closed since October for repairs.

"It's been a six-month process trying to get the work complete and get it open,” said Wayne Currie, NCDOT resident engineer. "The deadline to get the bridge open was Monday, April 15, but the contractors worked hard this week.”

The NCDOT finished the work ahead of Monday’s deadline, opening the bridge up for one of the season’s early tourist weekends.

While traffic on the bridge is back to normal, some repairs will not be complete for another month and a half or so.
