DARE COUNTY, N.C. -- Some drivers along the Outer Banks are heading across the new Bonner Bridge.

The bridge, which stretches over the Oregon Inlet, officially opened to traffic on Monday after three years of construction.

The state-of-the-art $252 million bridge is nearly three miles long and its highest point is 90 feet above the inlet.

It's the first bridge in the state built with reinforced stainless steel adding extra protection from the salt water.

The new bridge is expected to last 100 years.

A formal dedication will be held in April.
