CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. -- Visitors of the historic Fort Macon are making the most out of their trip, despite eleven of the park’s museum exhibits being closed.

  • Hurricane Florence’s floodwaters buckled the floors of the exhibits inside the fort
  • Because contractors have been booked since the storm, it could be another three to four weeks before repairs begin
  • Fort Macon State Park Superintendent Randy Newman says the park still has plenty to offer to those looking to visit

Hurricane Florence’s floodwaters buckled the floors of the exhibits inside the fort.

Park officials hoped construction would be underway by now, but because contractors have been booked since the storm, it could be another three to four weeks before repairs begin.

In the meantime tourists say they are still learning a lot about the state’s history.

“We could still walk through the casemates, that’s what they call them. See the magazines, where the crack happened and walk along the citadel walls,” said Hailey Wigington of Jacksonville. “I mean I feel like we got a great tour even with those rooms being closed.”

Fort Macon State Park Superintendent Randy Newman says the park still has plenty to offer to those looking to visit before the museum exhibits reopen.

Fort Macon State Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
