GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University is also facing scrutiny after photos resurfaced Thursday featuring students in blackface.

This comes after three Virginia politicians were revealed to have done blackface in college. Additionally, photos of fraternity members in blackface resurfaced from UNC Chapel Hill 1970s yearbooks.

One photo from the 1980 Buccaneer yearbook shows three members of the fraternity Kappa Alpha in blackface.

The trio was doing a Four Tops impression of the song Sugar Pie Honey Bunch during a Greek talent show.

A 1962 yearbook includes a photo of five members of Alpha Omicron Pi in blackface, waving Confederate flags.

Chancellor Cecil Staton released a statement saying:

"Were we to review our history, we would likely find many things for which we would, today, be ashamed. Incidents from 30-year-old yearbooks do not represent who we are today. Today, we fundamentally reject any expressions of racism, bigotry and hatred. And as imperfect as we are, we work hard every day to create an institution that makes all of us proud. ECU's commitment to cultivating a welcoming environment continues to be a high priority."

One of ECU's history professors says the area has a deep history of racism.

"Eastern North Carolina was a focus of the Ku Klux Klan, it was Jesse Helms country, it was full of white supremacists. That doesn't excuse it," said Dr. Thompson, ECU history professor.

However, Dr. Thompson stands by Chancellor Cecil Staton's statement that these imagines are a reflection of time, not campus today.
