WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Just over a year old, the container community in Wilmington plans on almost tripling in size.
- Cargo District is made of 12 tiny home residential units and 12 commercial units
- They are all made with pieces of re-purposed shipping containers
- They plan on adding 50 residential units and 20 more commercial ones in the next weeks to months
The Cargo District, started in December 2017, is made up of 12 tiny home residential units and 12 commercial units all made with pieces of re-purposed shipping containers. The district's developers said these type of structures are efficient and give the modern look they like.
The heart of the community is on 16th Street and Queen Street.
"It's really important to the developer to have a sense of community here," said Dani Natcher, Cargo District marketing manager. "This wasn't the best area of town at one point in time, and he really sees a future in this, and sees a community developing to where it can be safe. It can be safe. It can be fun. It can be walkable, and just have one of everything around the corner."
They plan on adding 50 residential units and about 20 more commercial ones, with expectations of these additional businesses coming in the next few weeks to months.
Businesses to look out for include a barber shop, coffee shop, bottle making company, and distillery.
