HAMPSTEAD, NC-- More than 250 homes are now in a flood zone, with 70 houses completely submerged under three to 10 feet of water in a Pender County community, off the Cape Fear River.

  • Many are staying with friends, in shelters and even sleeping in tent
  • Residents feel forgotten and are asking for help with security and equipment
  • until law enforcement arrived Friday, they have been doing their own armed water patrols at night

Driveways have turned into water ways, as residents go try to salvage their belongings and feed their pets by boat or canoe.

Many are staying with friends, in shelters and even sleeping in tents as they fear leaving their property, as looters come out at night.

“All these disaster places are there to help in Wilmington, where there is nothing like this,” says a frustrated Paul Hieber whose home is under water.

Hieber says the residents feel forgotten and are asking for help with security and equipment, like a big truck, so they can retrieve the belongings that are salvageable.

Hieber says until law enforcement arrived Friday, they have been doing their own armed water patrols at night as looters have been coming from the river.

On Saturday, resident Greg Lovell updated Spectrum News saying they are now receiving aid from local communities, supplies, water, food.

Lovell says the Red Cross has brought them supplies as well but is unable to provide long term housing for the displaced residents.

Greg Lovell is asking for help for these residents with no place to go, he is asking for anyone who can help to contact him by cell phone 910-523-8774.
