ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. -- A wet weekend closed several roads in Onslow County and flooded a few neighborhoods.
- At least six inches of rain fell near Jacksonville and Richlands Sunday
- Several streets in the county are in danger of flooding
- Residents can sign up for alerts about flooding in the area
At least six inches of rain fell near Jacksonville and Richlands Sunday, breaking records for the summer.
The Onslow County Emergency Services Director Norman Bryson says the roads closed for two hours Sunday but were open again Monday.
“The New River is sitting on about 17 feet, which is approaching the moderate flood stage. So with the amount of rain we've been seeing in the last several days, we're starting to get into a situation where the river is coming up and it’s starting to impact our roadways," Bryson said.
He says several streets in the county are in danger of flooding.
“It only takes six inches of water to flood a vehicle. So if the water is able to touch the under-bottom of the vehicle, it is actually able to lift it up and float it. The other problem is you don't know if the road underneath is washed out or not,” said Bryson.
He says the flood areas they are tracking includes Forest Bluff Drive and Rhodestown Road, as well as the 6900 block of Gumbranch Road, a small section of the Wilmington Highway, and Turtle Shell Road near the bridge.
Bryson says Onslow County residents should sign up for Alert Onslow on Onslow County Emergency Services website or call 910-347-4270.
