SURF CITY, N.C. -- The new Surf City High-Level Fixed Bridge, which will provide a connection to Topsail Island, has reached a milestone in its construction.

  • Last girder put in place last week.
  • New bridge could be open as soon as late next year.
  • The old bridge was built in 1954.

The town recently announced the final girder has been set on the final pier but there is still work to be done.

The new span will replace the current bridge over the Intercoastal Waterway, which was built in 1954.

The goal is to complete the project by November 2020 but officials say it's ahead of schedule.

Officials are hoping it will be open by next September.
